About Detroit

Although it used to be a high crime city, downtown Detroit has been undergoing a revitalization and has been transformed into a lively, bustling area. Many of the old buildings have been cleaned and restored and are now designated as heritage buildings, including the Motown Museum.

Even the Detroit River has been proclaimed a heritage river because it played a major role for slaves who escaped to freedom in Canada. The riverfront has a nice walking trail and is home to parties and celebrations including the Ethnic Festival held every summer.

The People Mover rapid transit system whisks people along the waterfront and into Greektown which is home to lots of shops, restaurants and yummy Greek bakeries as well as a large, modern casino. Two of my favorite restaurants here are Fishbones Rhythm Kitchen Cafe and Pizza Papolis.

On a sunny day, many people head for the quiet of Belle Isle park where they can walk, jog, bicycle or just catch a few rays.

Like all big cities, there are still areas where I wouldn't wander by myself at night but overall, Detroit can be a fun place to spend a few days sightseeing.
